Jeff, please post some of the pictures of catching that fish. You have got to get down to the keys and do some fly fishing here.

Which one, the pike? As usual, I was fishing alone, and this guy put me through hell! I broke my rod, barely got him in the boat, and after all of that, didn't want to put him through the typical, "hold the fish up" picture because I needed to be able to release him into 76 degree water (lower oxygen, sometimes more difficult to recover).
But I've got these from the day my dad and I went musky fishing. The weather was off, the water temp dropped 13 degrees in 36 hours, and the fish were shut down. I had one follow, and that was a half-hearted attempt by a 34" pike. My dad landed one, tagged, no less. I'll get some pics together from my trip. Flies and such. Some of the fishermen might find them interesting.
Thanks G. The Keys are for sure on my to-do list, up there with remote Manitoba, and the Gulf. Someday....sooner rather than later I hope. There's an outside chance I'll be going to Jacksonville for my next unit, but I very much hope to avoid that in favor of going back to Kodiak.
The first one is from my musky trip, the following three are the bastard pike that broke my rod. You can see the splashed water on my face from it's thrashing around me trying to wrangle it into the boat.

Here's my dad and his pike. He caught it on conventional tackle. He was able to cover much more water than I was on the fly. He's not as much of a pike guy, but he had a good time.
Pike are my favorite fish...tied with silver salmon and steelhead.

OK folks, name this fish!!!
Caught in 81 degree water, has teeth, can live out of the water for a day or two, eats other fish, mouth turns bright green during spawning, can get up to 20 lbs, lives east of the Mississippi (where I caught it in MN) and all the way into the south......
Brian, you should know this fish.

You're on the right track. They're very often confused for one another, but are for sure different fish....
My dad always gets that-he looks younger (He's 52.) And I always get the guess for being older. People usually put both of us as brothers in our mid to late 30's. I'll pass it on to him. 8)

It kinda sorta in a way might resemble a mudfish, but I've never heard about any fish able to live out of the water for 1-2 days. The top fin looks like a mudfish though. Bony, hard to hook (hook won't penetrate their mouth), they tend to hand out in stagnant water where nothing else will live. I've only caught them on the St. John's river up in the shallow offshoots.

Bingo! Bowfin, Grinnel, Grindle, Mudfish, etc, etc, etc. This thing has so many nicknames.
They can indeed live out of water for a time. There's a misconception that they can walk on land with their pectoral fins like those catfish that can do that. Bowfin can't. But they can exist out of the water for a day or two as long as their skin and gills are kept moist, so basically in a mudhole. They've got this air bladder thing they can breathe off of. It's what allows them to thrive in such stagnent, warm, oxygen-poor water, but you won't find them up on the bank or anything like that. Backwater sloughs and ditches that run dry, but hold mud. Very primitive fish, but very cool at the same time.
And my hook had no problem hooking this fish! Razor sharp, with a hookset that would hold a mako.

08-26-2007, 07:32 AM
Yes ma'am that's what I do. I know alot of the guys in that movie, as they used alot of actual CG dudes. My experiences....well heck, I'm not sure. I've had a 150' hoist pulling a guy off a mountain at 5,000' elevation, both of which are very high, and outside our normal operations. I hoisted a 300 lb fisherman off a boat in 40' seas 100 miles North of the Alaskan Peninsula, like you see on Deadliest Catch on Discovery Channel. That's what I did when I was stationed in Kodiak, was to patrol, oversee, and rescue those guys.
I've had a few good SAR cases over the almost ten years I've been in. But now, as I advance, I'm less and less the one that goes out and saves the day. I'm in more of a supervisory and instructional role now. I run my shift, and manage the maintenance on the planes. And as far as the flight aspect of my job, I take out the young studs out and teach them to hoist, as well as take out the other already qualled guys and check their standardization in flight.
And I actually enjoy my job now more than I did five years ago. Back then I wanted to save the world and get all the girls. Now I'm happy to supervise a main gearbox change (like we did all last week, and is a major job) and have it up and running at the end of the week. And happy to get a new guy qualified to go out and fly on the dark and stormy nights, and start the cycle all over again. The first pic is me hoisting, getting a swimmer qualled. In the second pic, you can see me over the shoulder of a guy watching his hoist.

Some of y'all wanted to see some maintenance pics, so here we go.
We've got a helo down for some pretty heavy maintenance right now. It's a "rotor head major." Which basically means we tear the entire head down, inspect it and put it all back together. It'll take us all week. The first one is all three of our planes. The second is the one torn down, rotor head removed. The third is the the #2 engine (Turbomeca 2C2CG). Fourth is the engine/main gearbox. Next is the rotor head almost fully assembled on a stand, almost ready to hang. And finally, the blades on a stand being inpsected by individual zones.

Clean hanger, eh!
They do change pitch, either collectively, or individually. There's two imputs to the rotor head-collective and cyclic. (The pedals are for the pitch of the tail rotor blades, which is your yaw (pivot L/R) control.) The collective lever is kinda like the gas pedal. In fact, some helos (Bell Jet Rangers) have a manual fuel control on the collective lever for input anticipation, but that's a whole 'nother conversation.
The collective is a lever on the pilot's lefthand side. Pull the collective, and all main rotor blades increase their pitch simutaneously. This make the helo fly straight up. A higher angle of attack puts more of a load on the engines, so pulling collective increases engine RPM, temp and torque (Q) of the engines, so it's basically the power pull.
The cyclic is the proverbial "stick." This controls your pitch and roll, and the respective rotor blades will idividually increase in their pitch to make the plane roll or pitch.
The rotor head works on an engineering principle of the "swashplate." A swashplate consists of a rotating swashplate and a stationary swashplate. The rotating SP rotates with the head, the stationary SP is fixed relative to the gearbox, but they're attached to each other on a ball-ring, and their pitch in the horizontal plane is the same. Try Google or Wikipedia for an illustration. It's kinda like trying to explain how an axle differential works. I can spend all day writing about it, or an image on Wikipedia will make it clear in about 20 seconds.
Now, all the flight controls are related. Pull collective, and torque on the airframe increases, as does your tail rotor authority. The tail is mechanically connected to the head. So pulling more power into your head, puts more into your tail. This makes your helo kick left or right (depending on rotational direction of the head). Most flight controls will have it built in, but as you pull power, your need to add a little bit of pedal input to counter it. Likewise, if you push the stick (cyclic) forward, the nose pitches down. This makes the plane fly downward. If that's what you want, that's fine, but if you want to maintain altitude, you need to make a collective input to maintain a positive rate of climb. And if you increase collective input, you need to make pedal input, and we're back where we started. You fly a helo with your entire body.
And the clean hangar is a necessity. Poor housekeeping makes helos crash. Simple as that. Can't find a tool? Can't find the screw you dropped? Well it might be on the floor, or it might be lodged in a flight control, and the helo crashes. All tools are in individual cut-out spots in their boxes, and keeping things clean and somewhat orderly are just a fact of good aviation maintenance. We get dirty, and make a mess, but it's really a controlled mess.
fishhuntcutwood
09-19-2007, 01:23 PM
...hey what is that little tube that goes to the large exhaust tube? Afterburners for choppers? :D
That is an oil vent tube. Just like in your car or truck, your crank case is vented to the atmosphere. We don't have a crank case, but our oil system needs vented for the same reason (heat, gaseous expansion, etc.) That tube runs from our accessory (oil pump, fuel pump, etc.) gearbox and vents to the atmosphere. Placing it in the jet blast does two things. Primarily, it immediately burns the oil mist coming out and carbonizes it so there's not oil pissing everywhere. And being in the jet flow creates a negative pressure on it, to encourage the flow. Kinda like the principle of a venturi. Not exactly, but that'll get your mind on the right track.
I'll get some more pics tonight.

fishhuntcutwood
09-20-2007, 12:59 AM
OK, lets start at the bottom. The flight controls start in the cockpit, and run throughout the plane up to the "servos." These are hydraulic pistons that physically move the flight controls. The flight control rods that run throughout the helo aren't all that strong, but it takes hundreds of pounds to move the actual blades. You can see the flight control rod attached to the mid-section of the servo body. That's a direct link to the pilot's flight controls. Think of the servos as the power steering.
The servos (there's three of them on the main rotor head, and one on the tail) are attached to the stationary swashplate, as seen in the first two pics. The servo is the component with the orange hoses attached to it. Those are hydraulic lines. The servos are actually complex pieces of equipment, so I'll just leave it at that. The three servos tilt the swashplate in every direction. To go straight up, they all move straight up, and move the whole swashplate straight up, moving all blades at one time. To change one blade's pitch, one, or a combination of servos will tilt the swashplate in the respective quadrant to move the respective blade(s).
fishhuntcutwood
09-20-2007, 01:00 AM
Ok, now starting at the swashplate. The servos are attached to the stationary swashplate (previous post), and the stationary swashplate lies directly beneath the rotating swashplate (they're one component). The rotating swashplate has four quadrants, and you can see the pitch change rods attached to the rotating swashplate in the first pic. The pitch change rods are the little rods, with the red and black tape on them. (Our blades are color coded-black, blue, yellow, red.) The tops of the pitch change rods (PCR's) are attached to the pitch change horns. The horns are bolted directly to the attach beams. Moving the PCR's up or down (input from the servos, via the swashplate) adjusts the pitch of the of the beams; the beams hold the blades....with two little pins! That's all.
fishhuntcutwood
09-20-2007, 01:02 AM
Now we're to the beams. Butch saw my pics earlier, and thought the blades are fixed....this is how they move.
The pitch change rod is attached to the pitch change horn, which is attached to the (blade) attach beam and pivots the entire beam, and thus the blade. The first pic is the entire beam, mounted on the "star flex." The star flex actually does flex. When the blades are on, the star flex actually bows downward. But with no weight on the head, it springs upward.
On the inboard side of the beam is the "spherical thrust bearing," which is basically a rubber mount, mounting the beam to the star flex. The same way you can twist rubber, you can twist these. You can't by hand, but back to the servos, and the "power steering," you can. This is the second pic.
The third pic is the "frequency adaptor," which houses the "self-aligning bearing." This is the outboard mount, and is just a pivot point, thus the bearing.
The beam tilts, the whole blade tilts, the helo flies like you want it to.

It's funny you mention that, as it's standard practice at work to say, "gotta go deploy a swimmer," to signify going to do a #2.

Jeff, How close could we have been to watch the action? I am sure there are perimeters that you must secure. Also, it is interesting they picked that area as a boat sank right close to there last week or so. Everyone on board was fine and I did not hear how they were rescued, Coast Guard might have been involved.

Jeff, How close could we have been to watch the action? I am sure there are perimeters that you must secure.
Well actually, you can get right up next to us. All we do is pick an area where we've got room to work. We've got underway (moving) and DIW (Dead In Water-not moving) hoists. For the underway hoists, the boat needs a trackline long enough to fascilitate the hoisting evolutions, which'll be less than a mile. For swimmer hoists, the boat isn't even involved, they just stand by and remain on scene incase 1) we eat it and go in the water, or 2) something goes wrong in the helo while the swimmer is in the water, and we have to bail, leaving him floating; the boat will pick him up.
You can get as close as you like so as to not interfere. I'd keep a good 75-100 yards, though I've seen boats alot closer. Just don't act all suspicious and motor at high speed towards the boat, or anything creepy like that. But heck, take pictures, wave, whatever. Something else you could do is if you see the boat out, just kinda meandering around, or sitting there, you can flag them down or hail them on your radio and ask them if they're doing "helo ops," and ask if you can watch. They may or may not tell you what they're doing, but if there's a helo in the area, they likely will be. Just kinda hang out in their vicinity-half mile or so.
Don't be afraid to hail them on the raido. Hail them on ch. 16, and they'll have you switch to ch. 21, 22, 81, or 82 for conversation depending on which freq's they work on. (Those four freqs are reserved CG working freqs.) If you can see the number on the boat, hail them by that, "Coast Guard 41327, Coast Guard 41327. This is Gigi's Party Barge (whatever your boat's name is, or describe yourself-"this is the 25 foot pleasure craft off your port stern") on channel 16. Over." Ask them if you're at a safe distance to watch helo ops. Tell them you've got a friend who's a flight mechanic in Port Angeles and that you want to watch. Don't chit chat on the radio as they'll probably cut you off, but just talk to them. They can't force you to leave the ocean. They'll just have you hold a position and distance and call it good.
If the helo is already near, circling, or over the boat, leave them alone. Go ahead and take a look, but stay off the radios. While we're over the boat, we're busy talking to them and coordinating what we're doing. They won't have time to respond to you at that point in time. The time to talk to them is when the helo is still over the horizon.

Jeff, yeah, we would never interfere. Just awsome to watch. Sunday, they had a real live incident. Some Cubans on a home made boat got very close to shore. All but one were cooperative, they had a little trouble getting him on the rescue boat. IFrom what I heard, he was trying to swim to shore and an officer, either CG FFW, or BP, had to get in the water to get him out. All of them are heading back to Cuba, probably to some God forsaken jail.
It was a group effort with at least three agency's/ CG,BP and FFW.

I know you wouldn't interfere. The folks that do make us roll our eyes, as being the collosal idiots. I know from experience you're far from any semblance of an idiot. It's people like you that we like to interact with. There's people that genuinely want to see and watch out of honest interest, and we love them. Then there's people that want to be part of what they see because they're wannabe's, and we can't stand them. They're the ones that get called on the radio and are asked to stand down.
And we do work more and more with the various agencies. After 9/11 it really all came together.....it had to. We're all on the same team. All of us not working together is stupid.

Hey man. We left Panama a few days ago, and are now just out and about on patrol. No real excitement to speak of yet. Just a lot of ocean and flight time. They're flying us like a borrowed kite-all day and all night. So far the plane has been good for me, and hasn't caused me any major maintenance problems. Still looking for a come-home date, but probably still two or three weeks out. Hey gotta do what ya gotta do.
Tell everyone I'm doing well, I'm sweating like a hog, and even though I'm hitting the gym twice a day, I'm still a fat slob. Oh, and my farmer's tan rocks!
What's the latest and greatest at the TH? What kinda of action am I missing?
I'll attach some pics for you to post if you like. You and Butch may recognize the "blueberries" in the pics. Did you guys call the tie-downs that? The fuel team are grapes. One is of a HIFR (Helicopter In Flight Refueling) and the other is just the tie down team securing us after a landing.

You bet Gigi... :)
here is this mornings installment... looks like he and some buddies had a kick ass time while on the beach...
Hmmph! I went peacock bass fishing in Panama. What a cluster fuck that was. I guess the Navy or someone has a bunch of "tours" they have set up with local folks, like horseback tours through the jungle, rainforest tours, dinner tours, etc. One of them was a peacock bass tour. I'm all in for that. So I dropped the $100 on it and then did some research on the internet. Google "Gatun peacock bass" and you'll read what I read.
I was stoked! Big fish, nice boats, and away I go! Nope. They shoved me and the three other gringos from the cutter in a 10' John boat with ankle deep water in it, and an 8 hp motor! The tour description stated that all gear was provided, along with 200 minnows per person. I brought a bunch of fly gear, so I was fortunately set because we got probably 100 minnows for the whole boat, and the rods were dry-rotted, antiquated pieces of shit. One guy broke one on the first fish, which was all of 10"! The fish averaged about 12" long, but we caught a bunch.
The "guide" was of course fishing too, keeping his fish, throwing them in the cooler and charging us to filet them. And he brought five rods, each with ONE hook. Break that hook off, and he had no spares. He had to call another "guide" to come over and loan us a single hook. It was the most unprofessional, ridiculous outfit I've ever seen. But we had a friggin blast!
We laughed so hard throughout the day, talked so much shit to each other, and drank some cheap Panamanian beer-$7 for a 18 pack! Then they took us back to the dock and fried our fish for us, along with some French fries. Turns out the guy who owns the operation also makes moonshine rum. So we all got liquored up on that shit and rode back to P. City buzzin hard. It was a good time. I've got pics of that too.
Man, flew damn near 5 hours today. I'm beat, and going to bed. Later buddy.

Wow... Jeff must be bored... Got another email with pics... When he's talkin' about the different colors, he is reffering to the flight deck jersey colors on the boat...
We've got yellow, red, blue and white. I guess I'd be brown then, but I think a "plane captain" in the Navy is different than one in Coast Guard. I talked to a guy who'd come over from the Navy, and he was telling us he was a plane captain on an F-18...as an E-4 or E-5. And this guy was a friggin rock. Dumber'n hell I tell ya. Out here, it's my plane. I give the plane to the pilots, and manage all the maintenance, inspections, QA's, maintenance release from grounding discreps, everything. I am the maintenance department out here. The helo, and the $1.5 mill support kit are my all my baby. I'm enjoying this trip because I get to run things my way. This is my first deployment as an E-6, and I'm enjoying that aspect of it too. When I talk, people actually listen. I've done this job before, as an E-5 out of Kodiak a few years ago when the E-6 on the trip had a melt-down and I took over. Man, I couldn't get shit done on that boat as an E-5. I was excluded from planning meetings, everyone second guessed my call and on it went. Here I say the sky is green, and half the boat agrees with me without even asking a question.
That bass trip was a hoot. It was the funniest thing ever when we got there, and there's these little ass POS boats that they want to cram us all in. I thought to myself, "yeah, this oughtta be good!" I added some pics. In one of them you can see the boat we took out. It's the blue one with the little canopy over it. They had five of us in that thing. And the fish in the pics are the average we caught that day. They didn't get much bigger than that.
I'm countin the days now. It's either 17 or 13 depending on where they drop us off at. But it's OK being underway. My mustache is so far out of regs it's stupid. I'm half way to a full-on fu-man-chu!

you need a big box to catch a seagull, throw a herring in and the bird will land on the edge of the box. then it will jump in and you go grab its feet, they have to jump back out before they spread their wings which gives you time. an old kodiak trick i learned on the dock while waiting on boats:D

Another email from the "gutwoodhuntfish" guy...
The deployment wears on.... We are heavy into the stupid human tricks out here. Tonight I bet a guy in the AVDET to drink the juice from a half a jar of pickles. We're talking more than a quart of warm pickle juice. I put up $50, and he's a scrawny little boy-band looking kid. He got it down, and then barfed it back up into the sink in the shop. Dude, I haven't laughed that hard since probably my party last summer. We were all crying we were laughing so hard.
And I'm hooked on the lemonade bug juice like heroin. I can't get off it! I know it's just sugar water, but damn, they've had crappy tea and grape flavor all patrol, but now they're breaking out the lemonade, and the mess cook is making it up strong, so it actually tastes like lemonade, and not lemon water. I know that stuff is crap, but I like it.
I don't know how it is in the Navy, but in the Coast Guard, as a trip nears completion, they start grabbing for things to make the trip more successful, and start talking about extensions and stuff like that. That's where we're at right now. I don't know when I'll be home now.
But tell the TH'ers I said hello. I miss hanging out, but I'm basically on dial-up out here, and even then it's hit or miss if it's working or not. I'll be back hopefully before the end of February. Should be way before then though.

Here is what I sent him this mornin':
Hey buddy... How's tricks? You get extended? I know all about being extended on station. :^)
I still haven't bought that fly rod yet.
Gary
...and here is his reply:
Nope, I think we're good for now as far as extending. We got a few extra days added on, but it's OK; they cancelled the last port call to make up for it! BSF in San Diego tomorrow, and then home. Should be home next week! Haven't flown in five days, as they're just steaming, and not wanting to slow for flight ops. It's getting cooler though. It's only in the 60's today, instead of the 80's and 90's we've been in, so I'm glad.
Having dinner with the skipper today! He wants to meet some of the AVDET, and me being the HMFIC, I'm the guy. So I'll be eating fillet mignon and shit here in a few hours. Then it's back to chicken and grilled cheese for dinner.
My best to the all the Housers. I'll have a deployment thread up and running soon after I get home.
We'll talk more when I get home. I should be able to help get you set up with some fly gear and such. We'll see what I can scrape up for ya when I get home.

I have a friend who lives in Oregon now but he was in the Coast Guard here in the 1960's. I might have some of the details wrong because it has been 20 years or so since this was told to me but: I think they were stationed in Mare Island and they were patrolling in the Oakland Esturary, SF Bay and they came across a stranded boat with some very lovely young ladies who had intended on a day of water skiing. Well I forget all the details, but you know they ended up pulling them behind the Coast Guard boat and they had went by Treasure Island doing this. They didn't know it but the Admiral's house is on Treasure Island. They got a call on the radio telling them to return to base immediately that the CO wanted to talk to them. They figured they had had it now they would be in trouble forever. When they pulled up to the dock their CO was standing on the dock holding a folded american flag in his arms. They couldn't think of why he would be doing this but they thought this can't be a good thing. When they tied up their CO wants to talk to my friend as he was in charge of the ship and he tells him "the Admiral wanted me to tell you that he saw you going by his house and that your flag looked a little tattered. He also wanted me to tell you that he never wants to see that happen again, and to keep up the good work." My buddy said that his CO looked kind of puzzled over the whole deal, and told them to put this flag on right now and he would hold him personally responsible if their flag had so much as a spot on it ever again.

Nah, it's been four months, so I reckon I can share some details. I've been tight lipped because well....good things go bad often enough....well nevermind.
Her name is Jessica and we met at the gym. She's smart and funny and cool and all those things. She's built like a brick shithouse, and that's a compliment! She caught my attention at the gym because she was lifting so much weight and being "serious" about it and not just hanging out on the treadmill talking on her cell phone. She reads my bodybuilding magazines, and we shop at GNC together. She's a couple of months away from her MBA, so she's got a brain too, which is cool. She's never caught a fish, so we'll have to rememdy that this summer, but that will come. So far no psycho tendencies, so that's a bonus!
This is her at the boat show in the $400,000 power boat she wants. (She likes power boats, but I'm hoping my 20' Ranger will tide her over this summer on the lake.)

Well, she's consented to laying out suntanning on the boat while I fish, so if I can "spend" time with her and get my fishing in, I'll be tided over enough. Everything else is gravy. ;)

No kiddin' GMan. I don't hang out with ugly chicks!
Thanks y'all. She's a good'n, and she appreciates that I treat her right. You'd be surprised the women that don't give a damn that you try to make them happy.
I'd say one of things that fist attracted me to her, other than the gym, was as we got going in our relationship she asked me, "you're not all clingy and wanting to hang out ALL the time are you? I like spending time with you, but I don't want to be joined at the hip." I said......"sounds good to me!" I like that she can come over to my house and we'll watch a movie or have dinner, and then I'll go out in the garage and work on the boat or tie flies, and she'll do homework or catch up on her monthly reportst at work or whatever.
I can say though that she's my first girlfriend that I don't have to worry about in a social setting. Every other girl, I've had to kinda watch and make sure she "fit in" with my friends or family. With Jessica, I can turn her loose in room full of my friends and she'll manage just fine on her own. Wow, is this what it's like to date a decent lady?

Thanks guys. I just hope I'm not eating my words in a few months. I've been happy before and had it crash into the side of a mountain. But thanks for the well-wishes, and I'll treat her right and see where it goes.
It's cool having the TH family root me on.

Jeff, all you can do is your best to do right by her, and try hard to trust she'll do the same for you. Then be willing to allow enough time for the two of you to settle into full understanding of each other. Don't worry that it takes time...you can't hurry really good things.
Keeping a relationship solid for the long haul is not always flying in clean air, but oh man is it worth negotiating the bumps when you get to the place where you both know the most important thing is taking care of your opposite number.
Sounds like you have a solid basis to start from, my friend. Very best wishes with it.

That's good advice, Burnham, in twenty five years or so, they might learn to really appreciate each other. Humans can be slow on the uptake.

Nah I know. Things have gone great for me before, and ended up in a ball of fire. So it's kindof a weird spot right now. I'm waiting for it to fall apart and get back to hating women. We'll see how long she hangs around. Hopefully it's for a while.
Unfortunatly, that attitude has got to go if you want a lasting relationship. It's hard to let yourself be vunerable, but it seems to be an unwritten law in my experience

I'll second Willie's words, Jeff...I winced hard when I read your last post. You've got yourself all set up to be disappointed and expect it to fail.
Things may not work out if you go into them expecting good things to happen...but you can just about ensure they'll go bad if that's what you expect.

I know, but it's tough boys. Twice now engaged, twice now shot down at the last minute. It'd be almost like deja vu to propose again. The first one I survived pretty well; the second one damn near killed me. I don't expect it to fail. I don't want it to. But knowing what I know, I'm approaching this one differently. I'll give it all I got, and I'm not going to sabotage anything, but let's just say if she gives me the "we need to talk..." thing, I'll stop her right there and say, "save it. I already know how it goes..."
Wish me luck.

I can remember, unless I have it confused with someone else .....I guess it was the second time, when you mentioned your impending marriage, along with some pics....then shortly after, that your girl changed her mind. That will take the wind out of anyone's sails. Hope that three's a charm, you deserve it to work out this time.

Just focus on having a good time together and enjoying each other's company, the other stuff takes care of itself.

Jeff, She looks like a lovely gal. As for the vulnerability thing...As you know and otrhers are reminding you, trying to "not get hurt" can lead to mistakes and injury. Be cautious. Be wise. Be determined. An attitude that says" I don't want to get hurt but if it happens I will not be destroyed" will carry you further, keep you safer and lead you to hopefully all of your goals but always to self respect.

That's the plan so far.

No I won't be destroyed this time. I learned from my first anihilation how to combat that. But if it does happen again, I swear I'm done with it. I said I was done before, but I met her and it's working out so I'm letting it happen. If I get burned this time, then I'll take that as my proof that it's not meant to be, and I should listen to my instincts and save my time and money.
Don't worry guys. I'm taking it slow, and I'm not pessimistic, I'm just cautious and not tossing myself head over heels. You can't fault me for that. ;)
