Nice rig. Is everything OK?
arborworks1
12-28-2008, 02:30 PM
Yeah, the truck is great. I would like to have a smaller 4x4 chip truck, that is all.
Mr. Sir
12-28-2008, 02:48 PM
It's obvious from the picture that it's NEVER been used! :P
I guess you just drive around in parades a lot. ;)
arborworks1
12-28-2008, 02:52 PM
Yeah that is the parade truck. The backup. Gets washed and waxed every month.
IF only that were true, any of it.

Im in the market for that truck, but i i bought an F650 with cummins 72k miles 2002 for 24,000.
It had new rubber as well.
Is that PTO dump ?

Yes its pto dump.
You got a 2002 with a chipbox for that cheap?

That is a good Deal for that truck. IT will never turn around on a small street.
Should ride good on the highway!

I have a very similar truck with a 3126 Cat. The 3126 was discontinued for all its problems but if you take care of it keep an eye on it it should be ok. As for mine I'd like to piss on it and throw it in the lake.
Skwerl
12-29-2008, 07:03 AM
What's wrong with the 3126? I think that's the same motor in my truck, it has 8000 hours on the meter.
JohnB
12-29-2008, 09:55 AM
Cat now makes the 3126B an upgraded version.
arborworks1
12-29-2008, 05:35 PM
Actually the 3116 was the motor they had so much trouble with. The standard Cat 3126 is still the mainstay of the commercial Marine diesel. This truck is a 3126 E I believe, without going out and looking on the valvecover.

Mine runs like a frikkin Swiss watch. 8)
arborworks1
12-29-2008, 06:56 PM
I have always changed the fuel filters when I change the oil. I have always thought that was a little overkill but I have not had any problem with bacteria in my trucks.
Cats are good running motors. I think the cummins get better milage but the they don't have the low end grunt.

arborworks1

I was referring to the big ebay truck. Mine turns real well. I would say it turns the same as your international. Same specs, just different chassis.
I would trade for a 4x4 chip truck! In good shape. Must be diesel.

Yeah, it's done. I took the arms from the electric tarp off, and it's pretty clean right now. I'm mounting a tool box on the dump's lid that hangs over the cab. Tool storage is the ONLY thing I think it lacks. I bet it holds about 7-8 yards of chips too, which is about all I've needed lately. ...mostly pruning jobs.
CurSedVoyce
01-08-2009, 01:16 AM
We burn here for the most part so the most I get off a job is about 10 yards. Rarely more than that. I can see where tool storage is major. I already have that issue with the one tons. I will probably experiment with the Ford in that regard. Place a set of boxes front ahead of the bed then the bed with lift sort of thing. Or I will just get a forestry truck.. Tossing both ideas around.

Damned rattle trap scared me to death .Going around a corner that thing would get a 30 degree port list if you turned one way ,a starboard list the other .

i like my man cab for storage, but i also need a 4x4 chip rig, and diesel for an exhaust brake, trucks for here are so spendy vs the flatland trucks
mike at graddys is cool, hes always buying, fixing and selling stuff. theres a good chance those trucks came outta california for a reason, may not let them back in
CurSedVoyce
01-09-2009, 01:13 PM
Yeah, emissions is a biatch. A lot of vehicles leave the state for just that reason. Too expensive to redo for the emissions standards. A 4X4 gas is what I will probably lean toward, but the bucket truck is also a serious thought. I ain't gettin any younger.
We are actually looking at tractors right now. Then a PTO chipper for it. That way I can use it as a loader and a chipper. I can eventually add a mower, both grass and brush. And then do driveways and such during slow season if I have one. Not to mention how handy it will be on our acreage :D

That is a big truck, What I have the worst time with is the sheer weight of the truck. Not really worried about cdl stuff, just the curb weight. My idea was the 4x4 off road buckets that asplhund and others use, with the big float tires all the way around. I have watched the spreader trucks around here just ease right across plowed fields that a stock pickup sinks up to there frame in.
Before you blast me about using mats and what not. That is what we have to do now. Plus those trucks are such shortwheelbase that they can be squeezed in almost anywhere.

thats what i need, 4x4 flatbed, id like a rear mount but for the $ it would work great
the float tires on the other would just turn you over in our mtns,
im looking currently and found our fine state will be making us do away with older model diesels in the future so im unfortunately looking at gas motors
does anyone know if there is a pac brake or something like an exhaust brake for gas powered trucks
our grades are steep and long here, and rpm speed becomes an issue quick
dont want to loose brakes a gain...ever...i dont want to have to roll it to stop it.
I don't think most gas engines could take that much back pressure. Gassers have a butter fly on the intake side that works kinda similar by make the engine work harder to suck in air. Sooner or later California business are going to have to rebel against all the nonsense or leave the state!
lumberjack
04-27-2009, 09:32 AM

I think the newer allison transmissions have a retarder that can brake the vehicle.

QUOTE]...i dont want to have to roll it to stop it Could you explain this?
Sure
the hills in our backwoods eat brakes, no retarder -and you will eventually fade your brakes, because the rpm raise very quickly, and then you are stab braking for awhile, low gears up r's real fast here
its like driving up to arrowhead or big bear, on a shorter road,
the unknown coast and kings range are brutal
i lost brakes going into petrolia once in my boom, just got down the last hill and they dumped all the fluids out.
and once in my suburban going into shelter cove with my 250 xp behind it, i used the hillside to stop me that time
our roads are small and windy,
if your brakes fade out, youre screwed, so ya look for natural features that will stop you, like a nice spot in the road to put the truck up the embankment and onto its side, rather than let it continue as a self propelled rocket
every year mclellan mtn on hwy 36 claims a rig or two as does 299
its kind of a safety thing to know where the cliffs are, where the straightaways are etc, id rather tip it over than go over the bank or bail out in the road,
kind of extreme, but so are the roads
stehansen
05-10-2009, 11:19 AM
Oh, you meant roll it over to stop it. I was thinking roll it forward.:|: I must be going blonde. Not to change the subject, but my nephew teaches high school in Petrolia.

It's strange he holds the same RPM (aside from some fluttering) for 10-11 seconds while the MPH's climb 15-20 mph. That doesn't seem "right" by any means.
Skwerl
05-10-2009, 11:45 AM
Carl, you're used to driving trucks with standard transmissions. There was absolutely nothing unusual about the acceleration phase of that video. 100% normal for an Allison.
lumberjack
05-10-2009, 11:50 AM
I didn't think my chip truck shifts like that, but you're 100% right, that's the only auto truck (not a pickup, obviously) I've driven.
Seems like that would build a stupendous amount of heat in the tranny, but I guess that's the TC doing it's thing (higher stall w/ lockup I'd guess?)
Dave Shepard
05-10-2009, 12:59 PM
That looks about right to me. The '05 Duramax where I used to work would hold a high rpm when you got into it, fluctuating only a 100 or so either way for shifts. Very smooth. I have a Jakobs exhaust brake on my pickup, they work great. I also drove a Mitso fh200 with the exhaust brake and auto, it shuts off, shifts down, and comes back on automatically. Very smooth, and very quick deceleration. They do have their limits, anything with a twin-screw really should have a real engine brake, IMO.
Skwerl
05-10-2009, 01:02 PM
Also, you're used to your gas motor which has a much wider powerband. Big diesels usually stay between 2000 and 2500 rpm when you're accelerating so there will be an increase in speed without a big increase in rpm. Your gas motor will rev up a couple thousand rpm for that same speed increase.
lumberjack
05-10-2009, 03:07 PM
Yeah, must be the TC. I've driven standard shift Class 6-8 diesels and they (obviously) don't shift like that.
Learn something new every day. :)
arborworks1
05-10-2009, 09:27 PM
I had an old beat up grapple truck that would shift and drive similar to that, It didn't have a retarder on it though. My isuzu has a exhaust brake on it and it will almost stop itself, when I'm not towing!
Skwerl
05-10-2009, 09:30 PM
Can an exhaust brake be added on after the fact? I could probably use one on that pig of a truck I drive around. Invariably the light will turn yellow when I'm 400' away and running 50 mph. :(
If so, approximately what can I expect to pay to have one installed?
lumberjack
05-10-2009, 09:34 PM
Yes it can be added, but I'm not sure of the price.

Granted it's a kit for a Ford, but it gives you an idea:
http://rockin-s-performance.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=12&products_id=1420
Just a WAG, but I'd say figure on $2k. Are you sure they're legal in your city (they aren't in Columbus, are in the county)?
Dave Shepard
05-10-2009, 09:59 PM
Kits are around a $1000, sometimes more, sometimes less. They usually aren't too bad to install. Carl, are the exhaust brakes banned as well? They aren't anywhere near as noisy as an engine brake. They usually just hiss, much quieter than the crash that might ensue from not having one.
lumberjack
05-10-2009, 09:59 PM
On Dave's link, Chevy 8500 W/ onboard air needs a C20650.
I think the ordinance says no exhaust brakes (or retarders), never paid it much attention.
Brian won't be putting the kit on himself, the Ford kit I linked was $1300, fwiw.

The first three hits on a Google search had prices from $1000-$1400. So I think $3K would be the absolute max. with full installation. Probably closer to $2K.
It would be fun flipping the switch and seeing the lil econobox drivers crapping their pants after they cut in front of me with their foot on the brake!
JamesTX
05-10-2009, 10:02 PM
You can do a cheap exhaust brake using the back pressure valve of the turbo. Guys do it to 250/350s, but I'm not sure how well it'd work on a big truck.

I simply don't have any place to work on it legally. I've put in my time turning wrenches. Remember I grew up in my father's service station.

The exhaust brakes are not very noisy at all. A real Jake on a truck with 10" straight chimneys sounds like a frickin' helicopter is flying up your backside.
Brian, do you have an auto tranny? You better ask around before you install the brake. Most often and auto tranny needs to be built for an exhaust brake, thats alot of back pressure that most are not designed for

Yeah, it's a new style Allison 6 speed auto. All electronic, push button shifting (a small keypad on the left edge of the dash).
Oh, you meant roll it over to stop it. I was thinking roll it forward.:|: I must be going blonde. Not to change the subject, but my nephew teaches high school in Petrolia.
Check this out. The guy says that this stop is using the retarder only.
Hey steve
have ya been out there before?
i did the eucs at the community center during the canooe creek honeydew fire a few years back
(no im not the one who topped em...i did the canopy cleaning)
i camped on light house road for about a month and a half, while working on the winery trees and then the fire
the roads out there suck, but its so pretty
your vid shows the dt466., with the exhaust brake
..great motor
my old boom had one and i loved going to places like that

No, I have never been there. The closest I have been is my Wife and I stayed the night at Sea Ranch one time about 25 years ago. Petrolia must be pretty remote because the high school has like 5 students. He lives in Ferndale and I'm hoping to get together with him on our West Coast Climb weekend. Here is the text from the video.
1994 IH 4900, tweaked DT466, making about 270hp. 4.78 gears, Allison auto, and a retarder. This run it weighs about 27k pounds, and goes from 0-56mph & back down on the retarder(no brakes used).

I wish my truck accellerated that fast. :( The book says my Cat only puts out about 215 hp. and I'm about the same weight at over 27K lbs.

He supposedly has the engine putting 270 hp. Must have opened up the rack. I've been thinking about doing that on my motor. It might start smoking and if it does I can just turn it back down. I think it's more complicated on the newer motors, and it can't help but shorten the life of everything.

ponci's diesel center in fortuna ca, specializes in diesels and even has some built for racing at the samoa drag strip
dont know if they have a web site
but brad makes diesels that can smoke a sports car off the line
and roast 36's on the road
see if there's a web site

Like this I have found one or two in good shape I was just hoping for diesels. Then I can crush cars on the weekends:D
I've got one of those same trucks, yep, an old aspy unit. I bought it from schmiddys. They put all terrain tires on it but it still looks menacing as all hell.
I've often dreamt of driving over cop cars with it.
