View Full Version : Another ugly stump

Clowns felling for kicks or whatever...just dropped a few across a major FS road and left them for some poor shmuck to hit in the dark, I guess. Too bad they managed to survive, somehow.

I took a few pics of this prime example of the tree fallers art .

Here's another beauty...though he does display a certain consistancy .

The yellow paint was applied by some good samaritan to make the butt more visible where it was sticking out into the travelway.

It's hard to tell from the pics just how big those trees were. They look small, but I'm guessing they are bigger than they appear. Right?

Burnham
12-09-2008, 06:28 PM
Not so big at all, Brett. Some bit less than 24 inches.

If whoever did the handiwork is caught, they should be made to say a hundred times, "Yes, I will read The Fundamentals of General Tree Work".

If that is national forest land they will thankfull if that was all the punishment will be . I don't old Sam ,like in uncle takes too kindly to people foolen with his trees .Even less of some fool that dropped them across a roadway .

Burnam. The evidence of the techniques pictured in your photos shows no expertise. Indicative of some poor untrained sucker trying to keep his family warm, or an inexperienced wood pirate.

Too bad either should happen.

Training is essential either way.

Looks like a stump cut I went over and looked at today across the street.. OMG I should have a picture I thought. But here ya posted them B.. LOL
Neighbor across the street dropped a leaning Bull Pine snag. It was ugly!....

You got it, just left across or into the road...there where 4 in total, scattered within about 5 miles of road segment. Main road, too.

So no wood thief. Those guys go back on the little dead end spurs for the most part.

There are cases of actual tree huggers doing this to block roads for further work they don't agree with like logging. Makes no sense. But vandalism is more common than we would like to think.

We need to make this the stump shot thread and add to it... Take our ugliest and best and put em up bros. Seriously...
I know we would learn from it. I wandered some stumps today that others have done in the neighborhood. YIKES.. I need a camera. Makes my ugly look good.. LOL

This gives me an idear...Imagine a forested area that was planned to be cleared, but didn't have to happen fast- and you charged tree guys a little bit of money so they could come in and fell for you, so that they could practice techniques?

It'd be good practice for a lot of people!

Found this one today... Was scorched in the fire last year. Looks like the fence guy may have cut it or HO... Still looking for who did the deed. And a couple of pics were it went.... and were it could have gone... couple of nice clearings down below... I knew the tree and it would have been easy to place it in the other two spots with minimal brushing. And guess who gets to clean up the mess:roll:

Paul, you must know that the PNW spin drop provides a right hand movement before going over backwards, and the dog salmon flip is an end over end. Come on, boy.

Burnham,
its interesting you posted those pics

i met some local high schoolers that had done something similar to a group of "outsiders" who were using their wooded party area

bunch of city types

so figuring none of them had a saw or chain in their suv's

they left a good half dozen trees down accross the way out
those folks most likely had a long walk ahead of them, and the laughs the locals had

interesting cuts the pics show, no cutting theory thats for sure

Blinky

I saw this today and chuckled a bit.

Take a close look. Not a typical barber chair (I say that having never actually seen one happen). If the tree was leaning toward the face, the saw would've pinched in a major way unless he was just burning in and it all happened at once.
From what I know, which is limited, a barberchair generally goes when you start the back cut and the weight from the lean cause it to split out before the hinge goes over. There's no back cut there.

Would somebody edify me on that.

Skwerl
09-04-2009, 08:37 PM
Chip, the only cut made was the back cut. I'd guess it was a fairly heavy leaner and the cutter simply made one cut from the back.

The first incident of barberchair in my experience, I didn't know what it was...that there was a name for it. I just suddenly realized that tree work was more dangerous than I had previously thought, and the cautionary about trees with lean registered. I thought it was unsightly to leave the mess, and quickly cut it off, after somehow getting the saw unstuck. It wasn't a particularly large tree, but revealing dangerous enough then when I drive through the area, it still comes to mind.
