I thought we use to have a thread for felling vids.
It would be fun to just get to dump em over the side like this.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/45RDZ3owtvY&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/45RDZ3owtvY&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

He's knows what he's doing, trust me I was filming.

Tree felling African style:

Luxembourgian style: (Felling a tree with chainsaw then tree is falling)

WTF are you talkin' about??? This ain't Tree Buzz Brett...

The constant overcritiquing of every single aspect of a fallin' and tree cuttin' operation gets tiresome... :what:

Pack you butt up on those hill sides and bang some wedges yourself... That was a great fallin' job!

I have a question regarding that video.
On a couple of the trees the faller cut them very high, leaving extremely ( at least to my eye) high stumps. Is there a reason for that?
In Switzerland they'll sometimes leave stumps like that, to help agains avalanches until the forest has regrown, but that didn't seem to be the case here, since it wasn't done on all the trees.

Reddog
11-14-2008, 12:27 PM
Stig,
In the first Vid, they are cutting for Helo landing pads. Some of the stumps will be used to support the landing pad timbers.

CurSedVoyce
11-14-2008, 12:29 PM
I often cut high just for comfort and leg room to move out into the safe zone. Also ... we have to leave the stumps high for equipment removal at times. They need the stump high for a Back hoe, escavator or dozer to remove them.. And sometimes to use for a tie in for extraction. When the stumps are to be a ground level, I just make one or two more cuts as it will be fire wood anyway for the owner of the property. Now if was to be harvested for lumber, yeah have to cut low.
And the helicopter pads makes sense. Never seen that done here.

Newfie
11-14-2008, 01:14 PM
It cracks me up when people leave stumps higher so equipment can remove them. A sign of a lazy or inexperienced operator in my opinion. The contractors I've cleared for want stumps low. It's easier for them to dig out the backside and less stump volume to pay for at the stump dump.

CurSedVoyce
11-14-2008, 01:18 PM
I just do as they ask... LOL A lot of operators have the articulated bucket or thumb and I guess they like the leverage. We don't dump stumps, we burn them.

MasterBlaster
11-14-2008, 01:19 PM
I've had many a trackhoe operator tell me to leave them 8 to 10 feet tall.

GASoline71
11-14-2008, 01:33 PM
I have high stumped trees before, and then ALAP'd them after fallin'. Bein' tall like I am it is more comfortable for me to cut at a higher level on the stump.

After the spar is on the ground... then I break out the wedges to support the weight of the stump as the saw goes through. So it doesn't pinch the bar in the kerf. Nice flat stump... :)

AMEN!!!! It's a lot easier for me to drop it high and be able to get out of the way, then come back and ALAP it later!

He must have been kidding about bad cuts in the first heli pad vid, that guy was cutting smooth as silk.

Gord, those are awesome vids from Vancouver Isle and BC. Are those current, is there still now alot of large old growth logging going on?

I wasn't clear on why, in the single stem heli logging vid, they were topping those trees out first (but it sure was great footage). For more room/less damage when dropping the stem? Or for picking the stem with a heli?

And those climbers didn't appear to have a climb line, do they spur up, top it and spur down? Seems like a rope would save alot of energy.

Cutting a fire line... Drop the fuel.
Also note the stump smoking... They get hot embers in them and will burn, so you drop those fur sure. Or they spread the fire higher up in the canopy.
Gets weird when the saw fans the flame ;)

for picking them...the helo can only handle so much weight. They measure the bottom and top diameter, which tell them where to cut, or if the helo can handle the weight.

Did you notice the guy making the two kerf cuts with the stick for reference? That was to help him leave the precise amount of holding wood, to keep the tree standing til the chopper comes and grabs it. They also set some flagging near by to guide the pilot in the direction to come into the tree---perpendicular to the kerf cut.

This is the first time I've been able to see these vids...hotel wireless is nice...no blocks like my FS corporate system.

I don't see what Brett was seeing in the helipad felling vid...no poor faces and backcuts that I could pick up. It appears I'm not alone...Brett, share brother, could you?

The dutchman African has got to have the dullest chain on that continent. Looked like an 090 to me too.

Some fine timber coming out under those helibirds...topping out the lower value portion of the stem is the only way that harvest method can pay. Seems a shame, though. On my forest we'd never go that route due to the wasted volume.

Love the porch sacrificed to unskilled layman homeowner. Lesson learned, one would hope. Bet he didn't get any lovin' that night..."oooh, baby, you are so masculine and competent with that nasty ol' chainsaw"...NOT!

Looked like a risky situation to me. Must be our type of soil and trees here that I have never seen it. They up root from wind and water, but not like that.

Burnham
03-05-2009, 02:53 AM
Oh, it is, you are right.

It's not a factor of wind, water, or any other reason the tree went down..it's all about the balance and angle between the root plate and the stem. I've seen root plates stand 30" dbh stems straight up, bucked at 41 feet from the "stump". The speed that bucked end moves is stunning.

If you haven't seen it, then you're lucky...don't overlook that possibility, ever. It can really bite a cutter in the azz, and really watch out for bystanders, family pets, and gear you might put in a "safe" place.

Thank you for the advise B... Dang 41 feet ??? Would be like a trebuchet, deadly. And anything under that root plate is goner.
I would imagine our large pines here are capable of making something like that possible. I have seen a dead oak over that had a huge root plate recent. Scary stuff for sure. I will be on guard sir!

Yup, looks like the sawyer knew exactly what was going to happen. That's why it was being filmed. He had most of the cut made before the camera started rolling and finished off the cut for the camera. Notice how slick the cut was? He didn't just start cutting from the top and power through, he had an undercut to prevent it from peeling or dragging the stem up into him. A very clean break and nice work.

In -76 I worked on clearcutting an area of spruce that had been partially knocked ower by storm, so a lot of the trees were down. Being a total greenhorn, I only owned one saw. On a friday my partner left for a dentist appointment, and no sooner had he gone, but I got my saw stuck, trying to cut through a log 3 meters from the stump ( 9½ feet ). I couldn't free it, without another saw and didn't like leaving it there for the weekend.
So I decided to see if I could free it by pounding a steel wedge into the cut. Well I pounded and pounded and nothing much happened. Then just as I was standing astraddle the log, the wedge cut through the remaining wood in the cut, freeing the log.

Airborne logger:\:

I flew about 20 feet and came down in a pile of branches and snow, with my balls knocked all the way up into my guts, it felt like.
I still remember the feeling of flying through the air, thinking: what happened?:D

I bucked the butt off a fir that was overhanging a road edge about 20 feet. Of course, when I tripped the buck the butt dropped down and end near me flew in the air. Standard procedure. But what I didn't know there was a limb still attached to it that I was straddling. Airborne again. Kind of walked bow legged there for couple days.

I'm glad that I rolled off the limb and didn't go down the hill with the log.

I'm curious why the lower pulley was in the system. From my armchair, I couldn't see the reason for it. Was the upper pulley on a questionable limb?

Might have been to fairlead off to a better position for the rope handler to operate.

Riggin 101
ALWAYS use multiple blocks/natural crotches whenever possible.. many benefits.
It changes the vector forces, often improving the wood fibers ability to withstand loading, that is ...the force is changed to pulling straight down the wood grain instead of more perpendicular to the grain.

It significantly reduces the works MA on the a single overhead anchor point, or another way of looking at it is it spreads the same amount of force over two anchor points, significantly reducing the force on a single point, which can get huge with force multipliers/shock loads on heavy bits...

reduces the bend ratio and/or friction/heat on the rope significantly

Creates a system where the flex of the limbs, as they get loaded, significantly reduces shock loads

Allows the climber the flexibility of using either point to rig from either side of the tree.

Allows the climber to lower one of the limbs with a anchor point off the other, without needing to untie the block.

I AM sure Butch and all the seasoned pros here know this already... so the above info is for any newbies reading this thread. Butch's question refers to the reason for using the second block when there was no heavy pieces rigged or shock loading. Its always a good idea to add safety margins to your rigging points, leaving more flexible options to rig out bigger pieces, and one less thing to worry about. The tree looked dead, and maybe he didn't trust the wood. Good thinking, especially if you are tied into the same lead that is being used to rig from. Gives that extra confidence needed to move with greater efficiency, saving a lot more time than it takes to set the extra block up.

NICE vid.

Gord
10-25-2010, 10:58 PM
The second pulley was there to distribute the rigging force. I never trust Bigleaf Maple very much, and when it's nice and dead I don't give it any leeway at all.

I've got some more video clips to put together, some of 'crown reduction' (haha) on a leaning old 8' fir and some other stuff. None of the footage turned out too well though.

That's what I thought: I was curious if you had a different reason.

What do they call that sometimes... fishpoleing orrrrr something?

Gord

I think fishpoling usually refers to multiple pulleys along the length of a limb or off-vertical stem Butch, not too sure.

Burnham my ropeman ran a grapple yarder for a decade or so, I think his comfort with the ropes really comes from those years of casting, predicting pendulums and swings.

False crotching wood is fun, I like the teamwork. I have an awesome ropero that I work with on big stuff.
What are other people's favorites? Some people like false crotching tops, I love it too,
in fact false crotching wood is like doing ten tops one after another after another,
and they get bigger and bigger as you go.

Just my little 2 centavos.

Gord, I love working Douglas fir, it's the only sps of Fir I've worked on.
We have many many Monterey Pines, Super fat gross, knotty, snotty, messes. Those suck.
There is a point where you can't catch the wood, I mean like anything over 40" starts getting really pretty heavy.
4 and 5 wraps really don't run very well, that's when ropes start breaking.

I've never heard the term square rigging before this thread.
