I think I'm gonna give it a shot. It's perfect for me with the meat, cheese and eggs. I know a guy who lost 125lbs doing it, I need to lose 30.
Any of you ever try it?
fishhuntcutwood
11-06-2008, 09:31 AM
I gotta have about 125g of carbs a day or I start shutting down. Don't fear the carbs!
I do know that my Mom and Dad are on a carb diet, which isn't Atkins...it's the one similar to it that allows for some, but still very, very few carbs in a day. They've never been fat or overweight, but wanted to drop 10-20 lbs each I guess. They do pretty well on it, but you have got to live it 110% or it won't be effective.

Butch, I never "went on the Atkins diet" but back in my bachelor days I found it easy to lose weight by going on a steak, eggs and fruit diet any time I wanted to lose 10 lbs. Be sure to hydrate well-high protein diets are harder on the kidneys than fatty, carby, heart attack regimens.

Carbs have always fattened me up.
The wrong ones at the wrong time always will.
Morning, pre-workout, post-work out you can take in your simple carbs, but other times of the day you must eat complex carbs to keep your blood sugar stable, and your insulin will follow. This will keep you anabolic and the fat will come off. Problem is as soon as you hit a beer, some chis, candy, Coke, whatever, your insulin spikes, you go catabolic, your body stores the calories and you put the weight on.
Whole wheat, brown rice! ;)

The problem with atkins is if/when you do have carbs you're gonna blow up. (that may be what Jeff said)

Yes, VERY strict. Only 20 grams a day for the first two weeks. I'll be buying some hydrolysis/ketone test strips soon - Ketosis, here I come!

Here's an interesting tip I didn't know;
Shop the perimeter of the grocery store and avoid the aisles wherever possible! Along the perimeter you'll find your acceptable dairy products, meats, cheeses and vegetables! Aisle shop only when you must.

I'm not a fan of the Atikins diet, both of my parents have tried it, and lost a shit ton of weight doing it.
The 3 problems with Atkins are:
1: You have to do it for life, that may be good, but I think it would suck. If you get off it, you'll gain the weight back in no time.
2: Straight protien is harder on the kidneys.
3: Carbs are damn tasty.
I lost a simlar percentage of weight with exercise in 4 months, 80 minutes of exercise 5 days a week. If I watched what I ate, I'dda lost it faster.
The nice thing was I could still eat what I damn well pleased. Of course the problem came back when I stopped excercising.

That's a bodybuilding mainstay. I only hit the aisles to get my whole wheat pasta and hot sauce.

I've done the protein power diet, which is similar. With protein power, you stay in the 20-30 gram/day limit. You don't have to stay in that range for life, just until you reach your goal weight, then you start reintroducing "good" carbs, such as those from fruits and vegetables. I always have trouble with it because I usually buy lunch, and often dinner as well. If you can prepare almost all of your meals, you will be better off. I found that if I was staying strict about the diet, I could go on a totally insane carb binge every few weeks, and it didn't even matter, or could even break a plateau. You don't want to loose a lot of weight, so it shouldn't be big deal. You will probably loose about 10 pounds pretty quick from retained water. From what I've read, if you are insulin resistant, or have a history diabetes in your family, you will want to continue a reduced carb lifestyle.
I don't buy into any of the zero carb diets, even if only for a few weeks, your brain needs those carbs. You may find that you don't have strong cravings for food when low carbing. I found that I often didn't care if I ate, after a while. For me, it made a big difference in my energy levels, and even my attitude. It was just really difficult for someone who would rather eat a nice crusty loaf of bread then a piece of pie or cake for desert. Damn I love good bread.
There has been a lot of controversy about the atkins diet.
It's not healthy to use it for anything else than a quick way to weight loss. Don't stay on it forever, like Carl said. That'll ruin you.

You have to change your metabolic rate somehow . In my case if I weren't active during winter times I naturally would gain some weight but come spring I would drop 10 within less than a month .
Now I don't recommend it but I had some bad fitting china clippers and couldn't hardly chomp on anything other than soup for several months until they got fixed . Well, my appetite waned ,it doesn't take as much to fill me up ,I feel great and life is good . Size 34 blue jeans that are not snug, around 212 which is where I was for maybe 20 years prior to landing this cush job I have now .
Short term....do it if you want....you can lose fast. Long term....it doesn't work and may get you pretty sick.
Pretty simple. If input is greater than output....you'll gain weight. Reverse is true, also.
I prefer to increase the output as I enjoy the input too much. :D

Edamame (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edamame) is a soy bean product, agadashi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agedashi_tofu) is a tofu dish, sometimes served with a spicy hot sauce, I can get them at the local sushi joint and I can also get the Edamame from Costco, both foods I assume are relatively health conscious and possibly alternative foods for our new eating regime.

I have never tried the atkins diet, so cannot really comment on it's effectiveness. I have always found a simple remedy for loosing weight and that is to eat a sensible balanced diet with all the food groups and exercise. It is a simple equation that if you take in more calories than you use you will gain weight and vice versa. Use more calories on a day to day basis than you ingest and you will loose weight. I think with any regime you need to stick with it, whether it be exercise or diet...:D

Yes, whiskey and water in the evening, a 'lil over a half pint. What I've read about that is instead of burning fat, during that period your body is burning the alcohol instead. So, all that does is stop you from losing any lbs while you're drinking. I didn't read that is stopped you from going into ketosis.
But hey, it's gotta be something and that could very well be it. I had better weight loss results when I went on a diet of fish and chicken breasts. I think I'm gonna give it another go.

Better get some breath mints .
Stay in ketosis for 5 days only you will lose all the weight and it will only be fat.
Just keep plenty of strips around because as soon as u r non ketonic your body will grab fat and hold it.
Its tricky coming of the diet you just gotta bump up the excersise and train your body to burn fat.

I think the best way to lose weight is to eat a normal diet, only less....and work out, work out, work out....
That diet should include zero (or nearly so) refined carbs, few if any simple sugars, or bad fats like transfatty acids.....easy on the carbs, but make them complex---as in real whole grain foods...for instance, not cheap whole wheat bread, which is mostly just white bread with color added---sprouted grains are even better...

Enriched white rice has had some of the nutrients put back that were lost during the processing, it's better for you than the unenriched stuff. It might be the law now that they have to do that.

If I'm not mistaken some time around the first world war it became a law that white flour had to be enriched . They were serving cheap pasta and white bread to inner city children who became malnutricioned by eating a steady diet of such food stuffs . It would fill them up ,cheap but in the process they were starving to death .
Even through the enrichment process they can't put in exactly the same healthy stuff that mother nature did in whole grains . I personally have not eaten white bread in decades ,don't even like the taste of it .

You like Milkyway over Snickers....? Some people have no sense. :)
I like fruit juice too. When I'm thirsty and drink a big glass of cold fruit juice, I tell myself I should have gone into the fruit juice business.

Snickers is a last ditch attempt at candy eating happiness. I only like certain nuts in certain forms. I would enjoy an old pizza crust more than a Snickers, way more, come to think of it. I wish I had some pizza crusts now. Dang it, now I'm hungry.
woodworkingboy
11-24-2008, 07:11 PM
Milkyway is too soft and mild, it's like mixing concrete without adding aggregate. You need the combination of nuts, etc. to allow the chocolate to get properly impacted at the roof of your mouth, to bring the essential lasting taste.
I won't say I've never eaten a Milkyway, only for comparison purposes, though.

Bleh, real chocolate isn't found in candy bars imo.

You mean you take your Milkyway home to eat...? My Snickers is gone before I'm halfway across the parking lot, can't lose the just delivered freshness, like it was just made that morning.
Milkyway sits on the shelf for who knows how long?
MY 60 lb remark here
i added water - a gallon a day, 3 fruits and 6 veggies, limited process boxed food, cut out high fruitose corn syrup, have chicken and fish, no pasta or breads AND MORE Exercise and it took 18 months to drop 60 lbs. it was one day at a time. BUT the exercise was 20 minutes to 1 hour a day and included, walking or bicycle exercise.
I see that you all, work daily in the trees and your body is use to that MUCH activity, so you have to increase that.

What about eating hours, is that a part of the diet? When I'm getting home late and consequently eating late, with not much time before bed, I tend to put on weight.
I think computers have added to many people's weight problems....nothing physical about it, if you don't count the carpal tunnel problems it causes.
Butch, you do know you're not 20 anymore? Don't be too hard on yourself. Concentrate on what's healthy, makes you feel better, and lets you enjoy life in the process. I won't for a minute agree that these high protein diets are healthy....nor do I think they will work in the long run. just my $0.02

As a casual observer I've never seen any diet whereby you basically change the body chemistry ever work in the long term .
Those so called miracle diets ,high protein etc have been around since the early 70's .Darned few have lost weight being on them ,that stayed off .In addition on a true high protein diet you hardly have a bowel movement at all ,It all gets turned to I think lactic acids or something which is voided via the bladder ,kidneys, liver , You have to really shotgun water on a high protein diet else you could get kidney/liver damage .

Butch... I'm 77" and weigh in at 235... all I really did to lose a little weight (I was at 248 ) was cut out all fast food and soda pop, and cut my beer intake way down.

They are all normal, but the doc still has me on the meds. My next visit will tell the tale.

I'm thinking to unload my stock in pharmaceutical companies. I wonder if MB telling of his improved condition would be considered insider trading? :/:
Sounds good, though.

Check out the book: The China Study by DR Campbell. Amazon or book store. Dropped my cholesterol level by 100 points in three months. By changing what I ate! No Meds!

Lookin' good, MB!
I bet you don't get as tired when you're climbing either. I try to run about three to four days a week (4 miles each time) around Diamond head. Gonna have to up that though when I stop climbing so much.

Oh lordy, you're DAMN SKIPPY. It's frigging amazing. I'm better now then when I was thirty years ago, and that's no shit.
I can't (well, actually I CAN!) wait to see what finally kills me.

Starting to get there. My back's terrible and carrying more fat than I'd like, and I'm stuck at 185. But that's OK - slowly but surely, I'll burn it off.

Back is always hard Butch, but it's my favorite to work, next to my legs. I think back separates the men from the boys. I think your back is still better than most backs out there.
Your delts are rockin'! And your biceps insertions look good too.
Now, I'm just asking...do you know how to pose your back? Alot of peole don't know how to voluntarily flex their back, especially in a lat spread. It's all in the scapulas, and then flex.

Heck no, that was just done on the fly while Doc was here. If I'd have thought more, I woulda gotta pump on.
