21 speed Trek here, although I only use about 5 speeds. I don't have a wide enough torque curve to only use one gear. 8)

I carry around a 7 speed Dahon folding bike in my pickup. Useful when I have to park my truck a couple of blocks from the job site when parking is tight. (Quite often in Hawaii) I unload my gear at the job and then move the truck.
If I am just going somewhere from home within 5 miles and I don't have to carry anything big I use my souped up 88cc moped. It will do 50 mph, good enough for everything around here except the freeways. I got tired of pedaling a bike more than a few blocks about 5 years ago.

Nice and light....I expect to to be worked
My buddy dusted me on a 25 mile ride on a single speed. But he is fit as hell...I hung in there on the Truth(9speed cassette), ....which I really like on the down hill.
This bike is a Gary Fisher Rig, 29'er. we shall see:|:

Why I like riding a fixed gear:
simple (no gizmos)
light
quiet
will make you strong
easy maintenance
nice to look at
beer tastes even better
Downside:
big hills
No Bivy, does your's have a freewheel?
No_Bivy
09-01-2008, 04:49 PM
yea...freewheel. I ain't riding no fixe' round here. This bike has disc brakes..Hills will require standing at point. 32 x 18 geared.

I havnt been riding much in the last few years but I hear the 29ers are really taking off. This spring I just put sram grip shifters on my fuel 100, I like being able to twist through those gears......... Sod the single speed:lol:
Any time you wanna climb some BIG hills and rip a 30 min decent give me a shout and I'll also show you the quick way up a tree........

Not sure what is is with single speeds, some guys take to them like religion, and other riders go with the gears. A lot of bike messenger riders are into them. My buddy was riding fixed, and after using his ride two times or so, it just seemed...I dunno, logical or something. The quiet is what first appealed to me, and then like just having to rely on your own power to meet the steepness your're riding on. Downgrades without a freewheel can get kind of wild, and mine has a brake. I also like the simple design of a single speed. Check out the velodrome races if you ever get a chance...damn kickazz.
One thing I really like about cycling is the total self sufficiency part....like riding way out into the boonies, and then having just your own power to get your ass home...blown out tired or whatever. I like the challenge in that, so maybe with a single gear it's somewhat more so. Anyway, that's just me, and I respect derailer bikes, even have an old Italian Masi. If I was riding on very steep terrain a lot, I'd go to a three speed.
Anyway, not wishing to change anybody's riding style, talking bikes just gets me going. All bikes rock.

Yes mate! Fixed on the road and SS off it, have geared bikes too for when needed, single speeds get much more use, less maintenance more instinctive riding, all good.
Rode Sydney - Melbourne and London - Dublin fixed last year, should've really rode gears both times but you know..
I am at end of 11 years of bike couriering, just starting tree work.

I have an old Electra Bicycle. Has the 7 speed internal geared hub.
None of that flamingo fancy pants and funny shoes for me! Buncha dorks IMO. Even cluster together like a flock of flamingos. You should see them when I am powering up a hill in my diesel. Spewing out plumes of black soot. The trail laying low on the ground, the perfect height for those bicyclists to breath :) I had a whole flock of 'em the other day have to pull over and wait for the noxious fumes to clear. Had the hill been longer I woulda turned around and done it again!:big-jump:
Yea, payback is rough. All those times those folks ride 4 & 5 abreast holding me back:evil:

I have an old Electra Bicycle. Has the 7 speed internal geared hub.
Every time someone asks me what bike I recommend. I always point to the Electra brand bicycles.
If you want to just cruise and have a great time riding a bike, there's no other bike on the market that's as cool as an Electra.
I have the single speed Cruiser with coaster brake. I had purchased it for my father-in-law and he was so short, he couldn't put his leg over the top-tube. So I returned it for the ladies version. Well, it sits at my house and he rides when he visits. So as far as I'm concerned, it's mine and I ride it whenever I want!;)
Frans
09-02-2008, 06:51 PM
I forgot the name of the 7 speed internal hub, but it is stout and works well.
Mine is a steel frame, but they make some light ones out of alum. Electra seems to have dropped alot of their higher performance bikes, and shifted to mainly beach cruiser models.
Nice to hear someone else knows about Electra :)

That lady don't need no gears!
Professional track racing is a big gambling sport here...Keirin racing, sure some guys in the house know about it. Got a friend who has been doing it for almost twenty years, and makes very good bread. The biggest race of the year, the winner clears a cool million. Those racers, talk about being a ...excuse my French, brick shithouse! There is a big indoor track about two hours away. The races are pretty dazzling, lots of beautiful bikes and highly skilled riders, and the crowd gets into a frenzy shouting all kinds of obscene stuff at the riders.....cool!

if ya make it this year, WAVE at stone pile as i am road marshall there - also they change the route and it is now just over 100.

If you've even walked -pushing your bike up Hog Pen, you're still obviously bad ass!
We actually have a few "half-gaps" that ride with us. Even though we're flat landers here on the beach, we still finish among the top. The main perk of being able to ride year long..
Here is a future Giro rider,, Steve Rusnak who just turned 16. One of the nicest kids you'll ever meet. Just got back from the nationals in California, did alright considering there were 80+ Jr's all cycling recklessly just to jokey for a placement.
He's cleaned the floor with some of the pro riders I've ridden with...
Hey! Nice to know they'll be a familiar face in the crowd....

09-07-2008, 02:43 PM
Its my third FSR bike so I'm used to it. This one the suspension is isolated from pedaling so you don't get that pedal bounce. My old one you could lock out the rear suspension and I usually did around town. Now that I'm used to it I hardly notice the difference.

I find that SS all the time will make you strong for hills and accelerations but you don't get the kind of top end you need for pushing a big gear into the wind, bridging to a break in a road race etc.
But I'm past caring about that its more fun and less hassle

That an aluminum frame...kind of the fashion these days, but opinions vary. That would be a pretty reasonable price if decent components are used. They don't say what hubs are on there, but you want good hubs. The welding looks great on that plate at the head tube, personally don't much care for the design of that part. They say you can whomp on the thing, I guess that's why they added that gnarly reinforcement.
Go for it!
