View Full Version : This one could have gone really badly

This was a couple of years ago. A really hot day and the potential for great destruction. We're pulling the tree with the GRCS: that's why it drops so quickly. I don't do these jobs anymore. Just not worth the pain.

I anticipated the roll towards the house once the tree fell. A pile of logs stopped the roll.

Too close to the house for my tastes!

I was young. Younger, anyway. I don't do those jobs anymore.

For sure I woulda put a kerf "underbed" cut on a couple of those bigger limbs so it woulda collapsed on itself, like I did for this tree.

:O wow that was close
All kinds of room :D
I don't like cutting trees that are all spread out like that, big yard trees, never know which way they will roll.

They won't roll anywhere if you make it collapse on itself.

I remember that video Butch. I have tried that trick on some of the trees I have fallen. So far so good.
That is a really neat trick. I don't know why the idea of undercutting the branches never has occured to me.
Well, now that it has, I can't wait to try it out. So I'll probably use it in a tree where it isn't necessary, just to play around with it.

Just don't get pinched. :O

What's really cool is if you put a bit of a top cut in, after the under cut. Something the limb will break off completely!

I've done that, but I could see a noob making a complete disaster out of it. Not something for the inexperienced to try.

My buddy, Wes Burns, had the notion to score a pole at log lengths on the way down after limbing the tree up and topping it out. With the idea that it would auto buck when it hit the lay. He should have got some venture capital and run. so needless to say it didn't work. Maybe if the score was deeper it would have. It sounded like a good idea at the time.

I have thought about doing that too. I guess I don't have to try it now.

"It sounded like a good idea at the time"...That's where some of the best stories come from.

I figure if you just score it, the log will all sorts of bust up.
Snap cuts would lead to a cleaner break, but I'd be skeered.
